Fit to Purpose: Why the Old Consulting Model Is Breaking, and What Replaces It. Consulting 2.0 is here.

The model that stopped fitting

For most of the last fifty years, buying consulting meant buying a package. You described a problem, a partner scoped a project, and a pyramid-shaped team arrived: one senior name on the masthead, a couple of engagement managers, and a bench of analysts learning your business on your dime. The engagement ran for months because that was the unit of sale. The output was a recommendation, and execution was your problem.

That model was built for a slower market. It is now under real pressure. Operations leaders running plants, supply chains, and post-acquisition integrations do not need a hundred-slide diagnostic of a problem they already understand. They need someone who has fixed it before, on the floor, next week.

The industry has started calling the alternative fit-to-purpose consulting, or Consulting 2.0. At Value Driven Solutions, we have been building our firm around it since long before it had a name.

What “fit to purpose” actually means

Four properties define it:

Fit to purpose. The people on the engagement have solved your problem before, in your industry, at your scale. Not adjacent to it. Not in theory.

Flexible. You get the expertise you need for exactly as long as you need it. Three weeks, six months, part-time, full-time. Duration is set by the problem, not by a proposal template.

Fast. Deployment happens in days rather than months. Scoping cycles, staffing negotiations, and ramp-up time are compressed or removed.

Fair value. High standards with low overhead. Your spend goes toward the person doing the work rather than the infrastructure surrounding them.

Two structural changes make this possible. The first is a curated network of experienced operators rather than a fixed employee pyramid, which means a team can be assembled from thousands of specialists instead of from whoever happens to be available this month. The second is a matching process rigorous enough that the network doesn’t become a resume pile. Without the second, the first is just staffing.

How VDS delivers it

Our Leadership Solutions practice is fit-to-purpose consulting applied to leadership itself. We provide executive-level human capital on demand, so organizations can drive strategic initiatives and reach measurable results without the long-term commitment of a full-time hire.

Here is how each principle works in practice.

Fit to purpose: a matching process, not a placement

The engine behind Leadership Solutions is our proprietary 360° Client Alignment® process, and it is what separates this from staffing. We begin with a detailed needs assessment that covers not only the technical requirements of the role but the strategic initiatives and cultural dynamics surrounding it. From there, we vet candidates across five dimensions:

  • Operational excellence — a documented track record of driving measurable improvement, not just familiarity with the vocabulary.
  • Functional and technical skill alignment — the exact skills, certifications, and industry experience the role requires.
  • Geographic availability — a match on location, budget, and start date across a network spanning 22 countries.
  • Industry knowledge and context — sector experience that shortens ramp-up to near zero.
  • Cultural fit — leadership style, personality, and compatibility with the team the expert is joining.

360º Client Alignment® | Value Driven Solutions

The intake is deliberately specific. We ask clients to rank the importance of distinct role behaviors — hands-on project execution, coaching and mentoring, technical analysis, program management, training, providing leadership and direction — alongside required versus desired credentials, language proficiency, travel radius, and three or more named success factors. That level of front-loaded definition is what makes “right fit the first time” a process outcome rather than a slogan. It also means the first conversation frequently surfaces requirements the client hadn’t yet articulated.

Flexible: the engagement is sized to the problem

We work with small companies and global enterprises, on projects running from a few days to several months. Clients specify duration in weeks or months, how many experts they need, and whether the work is on-site, virtual, or hybrid. Rates are structured hourly or by day against agreed maximum hours. The commercial structure bends to the scope rather than the other way around.

The roles are correspondingly modular:

  • Interim CEO or business unit director
  • Interim CFO or controller
  • Interim M&A director for due diligence and integration support
  • Interim OpEx and Lean Six Sigma program director
  • Supply chain performance transformation director, and industry-specific supply chain VPs
  • ERP and high-level IT program directors
  • Engineering program management and technical special projects
  • Advanced quality management directors across IOS/TS/VDA/Baldrige
  • Interim director for new product and service development
  • Logistics and 3PL/4PL improvement leads
  • Master Lean Six Sigma Black Belts with named industry expertise

A client can take a single interim executive or a layered team, including the mid-level operators who do the hands-on work across OpEx disciplines.

Fast: deployment in days

Because the network is pre-vetted, the sequence collapses into four steps: detailed needs assessment, expert matching, rapid deployment, ongoing support. We place professionals within days to minimize disruption. In operations, that speed is the difference between a problem that costs you one quarter and one that costs you three.

Fair value: paying for operators, not overhead

We are not a staffing agency. We are a specialized operations firm, and we hold ourselves to a 10X return on investment. Our network includes more than 10,000 vetted operational excellence professionals across 22 countries, representing the top 1% of OpEx® talent. They average 20 to 30 years of hands-on experience, and many have carried P&L responsibility at companies above $100 million in revenue, including Fortune 500 and private equity portfolio companies. More than 500 clients have used them to lead critical initiatives.

The economics are straightforward. You are buying a former operator’s judgment directly, without funding a partner track, a research department, or a global brand budget.

The part most networks skip: accountability after placement

The common failure mode of on-demand talent models is that the provider disappears at the handshake. We do the opposite. We stay with our experts for the duration of the engagement, providing continuous support to ensure performance, results, and accountability from start to finish. Ongoing support is the fourth stage of our formal process, not an afterthought, and it is where evolving requirements get caught before they become problems.

Where this model fits best

Fit-to-purpose consulting is strongest when the problem is well-bounded and the required expertise is identifiable: a stalled ERP implementation, a plant missing OEE targets, a post-acquisition integration, a procurement function that has never been benchmarked, a leadership gap created by a sudden departure, a transformation program that lost its sponsor. In those situations, an operator who has run the same play before will outperform a generalist team still six weeks into discovery.

The useful question is not whether this model replaces the traditional firm entirely. It is whether the way you currently buy consulting is sized to the problem you actually have.

Four questions to ask any provider

  • Who exactly will be on-site, and what have they personally done that resembles this? Ask about the individual, not the firm’s credentials.
  • How is the duration determined? If the answer is a standard engagement length, the scope is being fitted to the model rather than the reverse.
  • How do you assess cultural fit, and what happens if it’s wrong? A serious matching process has an explicit answer.
  • What is your role after week one? Deployment is easy. Accountability through the end of the engagement is the differentiator.

We are comfortable answering all four. If you have a defined initiative and a gap in the leadership required to run it, a discovery conversation is the fastest way to find out whether we have the right person for it.
